W.E. Sykes was formed in 1927 by a group of engineers and first establihsed in a small works in staines middlesex. As a result of the large demand for gear cutting machines and tools for military equipment thatcame with the second world war, sykes developed a considerable export trades as well as an increasing home market. by 1951 a lare expansion was required. the original small premises became thesykes machine tool co, a leadingimporter of tools and equipment from europe and the USA.
